Chapter 1
At Serena Vale’s succession ceremony, her four adoptive fathers ask her to let Lillian wear her late mother’s moon crown for ten minutes.
Eighteen years ago, Serena’s mother, the greatest warrior of Moonridge Pack, died protecting their people. Before her death, she entrusted Serena to Alpha Darius, Beta Julian, Gamma Marcus, and Delta Ronan. The four men swore a father-daughter bond before the Moon Goddess, raised Serena as their own, and named her the pack’s future Alpha.
They once stayed beside her through every fever, learned to braid her hair, treasured every drawing she made, and guarded her door during storms. Then Lillian arrived. Whenever the two girls wanted the same thing, Serena heard the same answer: Lillian had no family, while Serena had already enjoyed theirs for eighteen years.
On the night Serena should inherit her mother’s crown and stand at the center of her first portrait as heir, her fathers gather around Lillian instead. Serena finally understands that a place given away whenever someone needs it more was never truly hers.
That night, she renounces the Alpha title, leaves Moonridge Pack, and petitions to sever all four father-daughter bonds.
Her fathers wanted a daughter who needed them more. Serena decides to give them exactly what they asked for.
Chapter 1
Lillian began to cry just as the priestess carried the moon crown toward me.
The sacred hall was filled with members of Moonridge Pack. Moonlight streamed through the glass dome and caught on the silver wolf fang set at the center of the crown. It had belonged to my mother.
Eighteen years ago, she had held the northern gorge alone while the last pack children escaped. After her death, the Moon Goddess Council placed the crown in my care. Alpha Darius, Beta Julian, Gamma Marcus, and Delta Ronan knelt before the altar that same night and formed a fourfold father-daughter bond with me.
They had raised me ever since. Tonight, they were supposed to place my mother’s crown on my head and announce me as Moonridge’s next Alpha.
Instead, Lillian stood before the altar with tears running down her face.
“I’m sorry. I never meant to ruin Serena’s succession ceremony.” She wiped at her cheeks, but her gaze remained fixed on the crown. “I only realized that I’ve never had a family stand around me and give me their blessing. I probably never will.”
Silence settled over the hall.
Darius raised one hand, signaling the priestess to stop. As Moonridge’s Alpha, he was accustomed to having every decision obeyed.
“Let Lillian receive one family blessing,” he said. “The crown will be back on Serena’s head before midnight.”
Julian took my hand and stroked his thumb across my knuckles. “Only ten minutes, Sera. You’ll have many ceremonies of your own. She has only tonight.”
Julian had held me through childhood fevers and once spent an hour struggling with my hair before leading me proudly into my first formal gathering.
Marcus opened the succession code he carried. “The crown belonged to your mother, but wearing it cannot transfer the right of succession. Lillian has no Vale blood. Nothing about your position will change.”
Ronan was the last to speak. He ruffled my hair and smiled down at me.
“Don’t look so serious, kid. We’re letting her enjoy it for ten minutes. We aren’t giving her your pack.” He lowered his voice. “When the ceremony is over, I’ll take you running along the northern ridge. Just the two of us.”
Once, those words would have been enough. Whenever Ronan promised it would be just the two of us, I forgave whatever had hurt me.
This time, I looked at the expectation on all four faces and felt too tired to prove that I was not selfish.
“All right.”
I took the crown from the priestess and walked to Lillian. She stared at me, then lifted both hands in protest.
“No, Serena. I can’t wear that. Your mother left it to you.”
She did not step away.
I placed the crown on her head and freed a strand of golden hair caught beneath the silver band. “Now you can.”
Lillian threw her arms around me. “Thank you. I promise it will only be ten minutes.”
All four of my fathers relaxed.
Julian kissed my forehead. “Our Sera has finally grown up.”
The blessing resumed. Lillian stood beneath the statue of the Moon Goddess while Darius rested a hand on her head. Julian and Marcus took their places beside her, and Ronan draped the red mantle of protection over her shoulders.
The priestess called for a camera. “Since the blessing is complete, we should preserve the family’s first portrait.”
I was still standing where the heir was meant to receive the crown, but the photographer motioned me aside.
“Please wait, Lady Serena. Lillian is still wearing the moon crown. We’ll finish her blessing portrait first, then take your formal succession photograph.”
Darius glanced over his shoulder. “It won’t take long.”
“Of course.”
The shutter clicked. Lillian wore my mother’s crown and stood at the center of my four fathers.
For eighteen years, I had believed that place belonged to me. Now I understood that anyone could stand there, as long as she appeared to need them more.
I left before the next photograph.
The Moon Goddess Council occupied a stone building behind the sacred hall. The elder on duty recognized me and rose in surprise.
“Serena? Hasn’t your succession ceremony already begun?”
“It won’t be completed.” I sat across from him and kept my voice steady. “I renounce my claim to the Alpha position. I also withdraw permanently from Moonridge Pack and request the dissolution of my fourfold father-daughter bond.”
The elder studied me for a long moment before unlocking a cabinet and removing a silver scroll.
“You are now an adult, so you may submit the petition without their consent. However, a bond maintained for eighteen years cannot be severed immediately.”
“How long will it take?”
“Three days. Under Moon Goddess law, an adult child’s severance petition remains protected during the consideration period. Your bonded fathers will not be notified, preventing threats or coercion.”
He pushed the scroll across the desk.
“Your connection to them will weaken gradually. At midnight on the final moonrise, all four guardian marks will go dark. Once the bonds are severed, no request from them can restore what was broken.”
I picked up the pen and signed my name.
As I left the council building, my phone vibrated. Julian had posted the photograph from the ceremony in our family group. Beneath the image, he had written a message.
[Lillian finally smiled. Thank you for being so understanding tonight. We knew you would understand.]
I looked at the bond countdown glowing on my wrist.
Two days, twenty-three hours, and fifty-two minutes remained.
I typed the only answer they deserved.
[You’re welcome.]
Chapter 2
The next morning, I found my mother’s moon crown in the center of the breakfast table.
It rested in its polished case, carrying no trace of Lillian.
Darius sat at the head of the table with an untouched cup of black coffee before him.
“Your succession ceremony has been rescheduled for midnight the day after tomorrow,” he said, pushing the crown toward me. “The guest list will remain unchanged. Marcus will arrange the priestess and the Council representatives. You do not need to concern yourself with the details.”
Midnight the day after tomorrow was also when my four father-daughter bonds would be severed.
I looked through the glass at the crown. “All right.”
Julian seemed surprised by my calm response, then gave me a warm smile.
“I knew our Sera wouldn’t stay angry over what happened last night.”
He pulled out the chair beside him, where I had always sat as a child while he shared his berries and removed the vegetables I disliked.
This morning, Lillian’s coat was draped across the chair.
I walked to the other end of the table and sat down. Julian paused, but before he could speak, Lillian came downstairs.
Her pale face showed the effects of another sleepless night. When she saw me, one hand rose instinctively toward the top of her head.
“Sera, I returned the crown last night. You aren’t angry with me, are you?”
“No.”
Relief crossed her face, but she remained standing.
Ronan frowned at her. “You didn’t sleep again?”
Lillian shook her head, and her eyes quickly filled with tears. “Every time I close my eyes, I dream that rogues are breaking into the house. The room in the east wing is too quiet. I keep thinking someone is outside the door.”
“There is nothing wrong with the protection ward,” Marcus said, setting down the document he had been reading. “I inspected it myself last night.”
“I know.” Lillian forced a weak smile. “Maybe the room feels wrong because it doesn’t carry any of your scents. When I lived in rogue territory, I never dared sleep far from the fire.”
Julian’s expression softened immediately.
For three years, any mention of Lillian’s life among rogues had persuaded them to grant whatever she asked. This time was no different.
Darius turned to me. “Your room carries the protective scents of all four of us. Lillian will stay there for now.”
He added, “Only until your succession ceremony is over.”
Julian reached across the table and took my hand. “She received a family blessing for the first time last night. Making her sleep alone immediately afterward would be cruel. You understand, don’t you?”
Marcus offered the practical explanation. “The guest room has already been prepared for you. This arrangement will not interfere with your routine.”
Ronan rose and took the spare key from the hook by the wall. “I’ll help you move. No one will touch anything your mother left behind.”
“No,” Lillian said quickly. “Sera has lived in that room since childhood. I can remain in the east wing.”
She protested, but her gaze kept drifting toward the stairs.
I set down my fork. “I’ll pack my own belongings. I will also move my mother’s things myself.”
Silence lingered around the table.
Julian was the first to smile. “Thank you, Sera. I knew you meant it when you said you weren’t going to hold last night against her.”
I did not correct him.
There was little in the room that truly belonged to me. Darius had chosen the desk, Julian had hung the star-shaped lights, Marcus had filled the shelves, and Ronan had carved protection symbols into the doorframe with a wolf fang. All of it belonged to this house.
I packed my mother’s photograph, several changes of clothes, and the worn gray wolf toy beside my pillow. Ronan had given it to me when I was five, after my first attempt to shift had failed.
He carried one of my boxes and noticed the toy’s torn ear sticking out.
“You still have this old thing?”
“I’m used to it.”
“I’ll buy you a new one after the succession ceremony.”
“I’ll keep this one. You don’t need to replace it.”
I would be gone by midnight the day after tomorrow.
Ronan shrugged. “Fine. I’ll take you to the northern ridge tonight. I still owe you that run.”
He never came.
After Lillian moved into my room, she had another nightmare. Ronan stayed outside her door, Julian sat with her, Marcus inspected the wards again, and Darius ordered the guards to strengthen patrols around the entire Alpha residence.
No one remembered the promise at the northern ridge.
I sat alone in the guest room and placed my mother’s photograph inside my travel case. A notification appeared on my phone.
[Moon Goddess Council: Two days remain before the fourfold father-daughter bond is dissolved.]
A second message followed.
[Before severance, the petitioner must return every protective token given by the bonded fathers. Failure to return even one token will invalidate the petition.]
I looked at the four objects arranged on the desk.
Darius’s Alpha ring, Julian’s moonstone necklace, Marcus’s hand-carved family seal, and the first silver knife Ronan had ever given me had accompanied me for most of my life.
Their promises of protection had become the final ties I needed to surrender before I could leave.
Chapter 3
The pack physician knocked on the guest room door early the next morning.
“Lillian’s wolf core has awakened sooner than expected. She will undergo her first shift tomorrow night.”
I checked my phone. One day and fifteen hours remained before the father-daughter bonds were severed.
The physician’s attention moved to the four protective tokens on my desk.
“From this point onward, her wolf core must be stabilized with objects carrying the original scents of four ranked leaders. Without them, she may lose control during the shift.”
I understood why he had come.
The gifts my fathers had given me had absorbed their power for years. Nothing else in the Alpha residence carried stronger traces of all four men.
Less than ten minutes after the physician left, my fathers entered the room together.
Darius looked directly at the tokens. “You heard the physician. Lillian needs them to stabilize her wolf core.”
Julian sat beside me. “We only need to borrow them until her shift is complete. Once she is stable, we will return everything.”
Marcus unfolded a diagram of the shifting circle. “Ordinary possessions do not contain enough power. These four objects have remained with you longer than anything else we have given you, so they hold the strongest portion of our original scents.”
Ronan said nothing. His gaze remained on the silver knife.
I picked up each object in turn.
Darius had placed the Alpha ring on my finger when I was six, after rogues nearly took me from the southern woods. He promised that every wolf in Moonridge would protect me if they saw it.
Julian’s moonstone necklace had comforted me through countless nights when I woke from dreams about my mother. The base of Marcus’s family seal carried an inscription that read, Marcus will always be proud of you. Inside the sheath of Ronan’s knife were the words, For my bravest little wolf.
For eighteen years, those gifts had told me that I would always be their daughter.
Now they wanted to use them to protect someone else.
I placed all four tokens before them. “Take everything together.”
Julian searched my face. “You truly don’t mind?”
“I’ve made my decision. Take them.”
When Marcus lifted the family seal, its silver light dimmed for an instant. He examined it, then frowned.
“Serena is an adult now, so the father-daughter bond must be weakening naturally. Once the succession ceremony is complete, I’ll carve a new Alpha seal for her.”
Ronan picked up the knife. At the doorway, he stopped and looked back.
“I forgot our run at the northern ridge last night. After Lillian finishes shifting, I’ll make it up to you.”
“You don’t need to arrange another trip. I already have plans.”
Before he could ask what I meant, Lillian screamed somewhere down the corridor.
All four men turned and hurried from the room. None of them returned to ask about my plans.
Once the tokens were placed inside Lillian’s shifting circle, a message from the Moon Goddess Council appeared on my phone.
[All protective tokens have been returned.]
[The fourfold father-daughter bond will be permanently severed tomorrow at midnight. After the petitioner crosses the Moonridge border, the bonded fathers will have no legal right to bring her back.]
I closed the message and began packing my final travel case.
That evening, Lillian came to thank me. Julian’s moonstone necklace rested against her throat.
“Sera, I’ve always hoped we could become real sisters.”
I looked at the necklace that had once helped me sleep.
“Soon, you won’t have to share anything with me.”
She misunderstood. Believing I had finally accepted her, she smiled with obvious relief.
After she left, I packed my last shirt and opened the one-way travel permit issued by the Council. During the protected consideration period, its seal would conceal my route from the four bonds until I had crossed the border.
Tomorrow night, Darius and the others would wait in the sacred hall for me to complete the succession ceremony.
At the same hour, I would cross Moonridge’s northern boundary.
Their daughter, their heir, and their little wolf would disappear from their lives forever.
Chapter 4
On the final day of the severance period, Darius brought my mother’s moon crown to the guest room.
He opened the glass case himself and placed it before me.
“The succession ceremony will be held again at midnight,” he said, his voice gentler than usual. “What happened before will not happen tonight. There will be only one heir in the sacred hall.”
I looked at the wolf fang set into the crown. “All right.”
Darius lifted his hand as though he meant to touch my hair, but stopped when the guardian mark around his wrist flickered.
“The father-daughter bond is weakening.”
I said nothing. Fourteen hours remained.
He lowered his hand. “It must be reacting to the unfinished succession. Once you officially become Alpha tonight, the bond will stabilize.”
After he left, I began preparing dinner.
For eighteen years, the five of us had eaten together before every important ceremony. Darius liked his steak nearly rare, Julian preferred roasted pumpkin with honey, Marcus never touched dessert, and Ronan always complained there was not enough food before stealing the meat from my plate.
I worked from noon until evening and filled the entire table. This would be the last meal I prepared in Moonridge and the last time I waited for them to come home.
At six forty, messages began appearing in the family group.
Julian: [Lillian has started shifting. Her condition is more dangerous than the physician expected.]
Marcus: [The shifting circle requires four leaders of different ranks. Tonight’s succession may have to be postponed for one day. Pack law permits delays under exceptional circumstances.]
Darius: [Stay at home. Wait for us.]
Ronan: [I’ll return to the sacred hall as soon as she is stable.]
I looked at the steaming dishes and replied with one word.
[All right.]
By eight thirty, the steak had gone cold.
At nine, Julian called by video. Lillian lay in the center of the shifting circle with the moonstone necklace against her chest and Darius’s ring clutched in one hand. Marcus’s seal and Ronan’s silver knife anchored opposite sides of the formation.
All four of my fathers surrounded her.
Julian noticed the untouched meal behind me. “You’ve been waiting for us?”
“I wanted us to share one last dinner before the succession ceremony.”
He did not understand what I meant by last. Guilt appeared briefly in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Sera. We’ll return as soon as Lillian is stable.”
Lillian heard my name and tightened her grip on his hand. “Papa, don’t leave. I’m scared.”
Julian bent down to comfort her. Darius looked into the screen and made the decision for everyone.
“Serena, your ceremony can be delayed. Her first shift cannot.”
“One day at most,” Marcus added. “Your right to become Alpha will not be affected.”
Ronan promised to make it up to me tomorrow.
Julian’s voice softened. “Let her have tonight too, please. You’ve had us for eighteen years, and you’ll have us for many more.”
I looked at the four men gathered around Lillian and smiled.
“All right. I’m giving all of you to her.”
They heard only the first two words.
Julian smiled with relief. “Good girl.”
When the call ended, I threw away the cold food, washed all five place settings, and returned them to the cabinet. I left four letters on the table and looked one last time at the house where I had spent eighteen years.
At eleven, I carried my luggage outside into the cold night.
No one noticed.
The Council seal on my one-way permit concealed my route from the weakening bonds. The warrior at the gate allowed me through, although he looked confused.
“Lady Serena, isn’t your succession ceremony tonight?”
“It will not be held.”
“When will you return?”
I glanced back at the illuminated Alpha residence. “I won’t.”
With one minute remaining before midnight, I reached Moonridge’s northern border. My phone lit repeatedly.
Darius: [The ceremony has been delayed for another thirty minutes. Remain at home.]
Marcus: [The priestess has prepared the ritual again. Wait for us.]
Ronan: [Kid, don’t be angry. I’ll spend the entire day with you tomorrow.]
The final message came from Julian.
[Lillian completed her first shift. Thank you for giving way to her again tonight.]
I did not answer.
When the midnight bell rang, I carried my luggage across the boundary.
The four silver guardian marks around my wrist split at once and dissolved into the wind. During the final instant of our connection, four emotions reached me from the other end of the bonds: Darius’s fury, Marcus’s shock, Ronan’s fear, and Julian’s devastating grief.
Inside Lillian’s shifting chamber, all four men fell to their knees.
The marks around their wrists had turned black.
Darius seized the physician by the collar. “What happened?”
The physician stared at the dead marks, his face drained of color.
“Four guardian marks can turn black at the same moment for only two reasons. The first is that Serena has died.”
Julian stumbled backward. “What is the second?”
The physician looked at them before answering.
“She is alive, but she chose to sever every father-daughter bond.”
His voice dropped lower.
“She no longer wants any of you.”
